Also I have been asking Iran to become pro-active, transparent and to be fully co-operative and I hope I'll see that mode of co-operation in the next few months. But the al Qaeda individuals who were killed over the last several days show that the Saudis are taking it seriously, and they're going after these people. And they recognize the danger that the presence of al Qaeda and Saudi Arabia presents, not only to Saudis, but to the expatriate community that works in Saudi Arabia. So I'm pleased that the Saudis are acting in such an aggressive way to get these killers and murders and to make it clear to them that they will not be successful in their terrorist activities in Saudi Arabia." 1.57 7. - Story Text: Powell talks tough on Iran with IAEA chief, praises
Saudi Arabia for aggressive stance against al Queda
U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell has demanded
that Iran comply with demands from the IAEA, and prove it
is not developing nuclear weapons.
Meeting with the head of the IAEA in Washington DC on
Monday (June 21), Powell said he welcomed a tough IAEA
resolution, which rebuked Iran for failing to be honest
about its nuclear programme.
"They have been put on notice, once again rather firmly
and strongly on this resolution. The international
community is expecting it to answer its questions and
respond fully and in due course we'll have a chance to
examine their response - in September - and at that time
judgements can be made as to what action might be
appropriate" Powell said.
Head of the IAEA, Mohamed El Baradei, told reporters he
wants to bring this issue to a close as soon as possible.
"I have been asking Iran to become pro-active, transparent
and fully co-operative and I hope I'll see that mode of
co-operation in the next few months. I think the
international community is urgently seeking reassurance from
the agency that Iran's programme is exclusively for
peaceful purposes."
When Powell was asked how serious a blow was dealt to
al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia after the killing of its leader in
retaliation for the beheading of an American citizen, he
said that Saudi Arabia remains a dangerous place, but
praised it's aggressive actions to get these killers and
murderers. "Well, it's still a dangerous place, because of
the attacks that have happened in recent months. But the al
Qaeda individuals who were killed over the last several
days show that the Saudis are taking it seriously, and
they're going after these people. And they recognize the
danger that the presence of al Qaeda and Saudi Arabia
presents, not only to Saudis, but to the expatriate
community that works in Saudi Arabia. So I'm pleased that
the Saudis are acting in such an aggressive way to get
these killers and murders and to make it clear to them that
they will not be successful in their terrorist activities
in Saudi Arabia."
