- Story Text: The Secretary-General of the International Federation
of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has appealed for
more help for India's earthquake victims as the organisation
mounts what is, potentially, the largest ever single relief
and reconstruction operation in one country.
Didier Cherpitel, Secretary-General for the
International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies, visited a Japanese field hospital in the village of
Sukhpar, outside Bhuj town on Sunday (February 4).
The Japanese medical team gave Cherpitel a briefing on the
latest situation in the area.
"The main pressing issue is clearly on health, and we can
see it here with the Japanese Red Cross, how they care with
people who are being treated in the first phase, but need
continuous treatment. That's a very important point,"
Cherpitel told Reuters.
He added that, although the Red Cross has about 300,000
tents and blankets to give to the victims, much more is
needed.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies has also been flying daily from Delhi to bring
personnel and emergency supplies to Bhuj near the epicentre of
the earthquake, as well as to evacuate some of those injured.
Sixteen cargo planes in a Red Cross airlift have already
taken 600 tonnes of emergency supplies since the January 26
earthquake that killed an estimated 30,000 people and left
hundreds of thousands homeless.
At least 20 different nationalities are involved in the
Red Cross operation and 13 countries have taken part in the
various airlift of supplies: Australia, Belgium, Britain,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iran, Japan, Spain, Sweden,
the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
Italy's Red Cross society has sent supplies using trucks.
The International Red Cross had appealed for some 15. 45
million U.S. dollars for the earthquake victims. So far, it
has received, in cash and in kind, 60 per cent of the amount.
Following the short-term relief is the huge task of
reconstruction which officials say could take a long time
given the extent of the damage on Bhuj's infrastructure.
