The source of the problem is in Baghdad, a nation with enormous riches, intellectual riches and the riches that they have in the form of oil. We have to call this regime the way it needs to be called, a regime that is dictatorial, that does not mean well for the region, that takes advantage of public opinion, that uses it's people for propaganda purposes." 0.50 3. - Story Text: German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer met Secretary
of State Colin Powell and other officials in the new Bush
administration in Washington on Tuesday.
At 90-minute meeting at the State Department at which
Iraq and other international topics were discussed, Powell
said Iraq was "a nation with enormous riches, intellectual
riches, and the riches that they have in the form of oil. If
only they would use it for good purposes, instead of bad
purposes, evil purposes. "
Fischer added, "We appreciate very much that you are
looking for a political solution, and you underline that,
indeed, Saddam Hussein and his policy which tries to get the
capabilities for weapons of mass destruction and missile
technologies is the real reason, and that the embargo policies
are not directed against the Iraqi people, but directed
against their policy."
Fischer concluded, "We have a lot of common interests
based on the same values, based on common interests, and we
will very closely cooperate in the future to go ahead."
Fischer's three day visit was clouded on his departure
when prosecutors in Germany said they had formally begun an
inquiry into whether he lied at a murder trial last month,
when he denied providing accommodation for an urban guerrilla
in the 1970s.
Fischer, who admits he was a left-wing militant in his
youth, says he is innocent and has brushed off calls for his
resignation.
His visit to the United States is aimed at paving the way
for a future meeting between President George W. Bush and
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
