- Story Text: U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan expresses concern regarding nuclear
weapons in Korean peninsula, calls for democracy in Myanmar.
Diplomatic attempts are underway to North Korea back on the
discussion table over nuclear weapons in the Korean peninsula, United
Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Saturday (April 23, 2005).
He also hoped the Security Council will not have to take action to
resolve the crisis.
"On the North Korean issue, attempts are being made to resolve the
issue diplomatically through the six-party talks and I hope the talks
will resume in the not too distant future. I know attempts are being made
to bring everybody back to the table. As to your second question
what will the Security Council do if this attempt were not to succeed. I
hope we will be able to succeed and dissuade North Korea from
continuing on this present path and that the Security Council need not
have to get into taking action. I would urge North Korea to work with
others to resolve the crisis," Annan told reporters at the sidelines
of
the Asia Africa Summit in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
Annan is attending the two-day summit which commemorates the 50th
anniversary of the Asia Africa Conference in Indonesia's Bandung city
in 1955.
The UN top official also had bilateral talks with leaders attending
the summit, including Myanmar ruler General Than Shwe.
He said the meeting with Than Shwe centred on democratic reforms in
the reclusive Asian nation.
"Yes I meet General Than Shwe and we did discuss the situation
in
Myanmar and the democratization process. He briefed me extensively as
to how he sees this and how things were going on. I did raise a
question on Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD and the fact that it is
important that all citizens are able to participate in the
constitutional process in the national discussions to be able to live
freely without restrictions and to be able to organize themselves and
exercise their individual and democratic rights," Annan said.
Myanmar is under pressure to release Suu Kyi and leaders of the
National League for Democracy (NLD) who have been detained and are
excluded from talks to frame the country's constitution.
