Terrorism, from my point of view and I think from the Russian point of view is terrorism, you cant pick and choose groups of terrorists. A terrorist is a terrorist, is a terrorist. We will try to support the Russian Federation where we understand their policies and where we understand their strategy. We are a little bit disappointed, that recently it seems, that the Russian Federation has gotten a little bit more secretive about their strategy and restricted the media somehow, so we don't have full access to this information. As we go forward, I hope, the Russian Federation will clear all of this, how she should prosecute this war on terror, where we are in agreement, we provide assistance." 1.07 6. SOUNDBITE (English) U.S. UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE RICHARD ARMITAGE SAYING: "Najaf is a very good example, when the Iraqi national forces did the brunt of the fighting, supported by the coalition and as soon as success was brought to Najaf, the government of Prime Minister Alawi put in reconstruction funds to capture the hearts and minds of people, and as far as I am informed, in the 16 days since Najaf, we haven't have one security incident. And that would be the strategy of the government. I mentioned earlier at the Defense Ministry, we are also working simultaneously with the Syrians. In the trilateral fashion - that is US, Iraqi and Syrians bringing closure to the border, which will be enormously helpful in bringing down the security incidents." 2.11 10. - Story Text: U.S. Undersecretary of State Richard Armitage says
he expects insurgency in Iraq to worsen
The approach of elections in Iraq is likely to spur
more violence in the country, U.S. Deputy Secretary of
State Richard Armitage said on Wednesday (September 15) .
Fighting has surged in Iraq over the last few days
after U.S.-led forces launched fierce offensives in a bid
to retake pockets of the country that have fallen under
guerrilla control.
"We feel along with our allies in Iraq that we are
making progress... We never thought it would be easy, we do
expect an increase in violence as we approach the January
elections," Armitage told a news conference.
He was speaking a day after a huge car bomb ripped
through a crowded market near a Baghdad police
headquarters, killing at least 47 people in the deadliest
single attack in Iraq's capital in six months.
Armitage was visiting Prague to hold talks with top
Czech government officials as part of his Eastern European
trip to drum up support for U.S. policies. The Czechs
joined the NATO military alliance in 1999.
Armitage also also met with Czech Foreing Minister Cyril
Svoboda on the sensitive question of visas, which are
necessary just for Czechs visiting the USA, but not for
Americans visiting the Czech Republic.
Later in the afternoon Richard Armitage also was
expected to meet Czech Prime Minister Stanislav Gross.
