- Story Text: U.S. Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz has said
the U.S. remains concerned about the infiltration of Islamic
militants across the Line of Control separating nuclear rivals
India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir region.
And Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes has said
Pakistan should hand over the 20 militants that India says are
involved in terrorist activities, in order to end the tense
standoff between the two nuclear neighbours.
Wolfowitz, speaking on Saturday (June 1), on the
sidelines of the two-day Asia Security Conference, hosted by
the London-based International Institute for Strategic
Studies, said the infiltration of the militants was at "the
heart of the problem".
"As Senator Hagel said in quoting the President, we are
very concerned about the infiltration across the Line of
Control, that is the heart of the problem," he said.
The United States is increasing pressure on Pakistan to
crack-down on Islamic militants in the disputed Himalayan
region of Kashmir.
Neighbouring India has blamed these militants for the
attack on its parliament last December and another attack on
its military camp in Kashmir in May.
About 150 defence officials and security experts were
attending the conference in Singapore to discuss issues of
terrorism, arms proliferation and the impact of a resurgent
China.
The conference is being held among some of the tightest
security seen in Singapore since the September 11th attacks,
with hundreds of police patrolling the hotel and its grounds.
Meanwhile, Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes,
speaking on the sidelines of the conference, said the list of
the 20 militants had been handed over to Pakistan President
Pervez Musharraf.
"Well we have said repeatedly that what Pakistan should do
is to first and foremost end the cross-border terrorism and
second, hand over to us those 20 terrorists, the names who we
have handed to the Pakistani president," said Fernandes.
India and Pakistan have deployed nearly a million troops
on their borders amid increasing tensions and calls of wars
between the two nuclear neighbours.
