- Story Text: United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has arrived
in the Democratic Republic of Congo for talks aimed at
bolstering the country's peace process after three years of
war.
Annan, who is due to meet Congolese President Joseph
Kabila as well as opposition politicians in Kinshasa on Sunday
(September 2), said he was encouraged by recent progress in
implementing a 1999 peace accord, and praised Kabila's role.
The Secretary General will fly to the rebel-held town of
Kisangani on Monday (September 3) and on to the Rwandan
capital Kigali for talks with President Paul Kagame, who has
over 10,000 soldiers in Congo backing rebels.
Uganda and Burundi also back Congolese rebels, while
Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia have sent in troops to support
the government in Kinshasa.
Earlier on Saturday (September 1), Congolese Foreign
Minister Leonard She Okitundu said his government would be
asking Annan to transform the U.N. observer mission in Congo
into a true peacekeeping force, but Annan said this was
unnecessary.
