SLV PRESS CONFERENCE 0.49 7. SV JPURNALIST PAN TO MCU (English) SILVAN SHALOM SAYING: "We are having Dr. ElBaradei from today until Thursday. I believe that he will have good meetings with the Israeli Prime Minister and with other high officials in Israel. I myself will meet him in the airport on my way back from the States and he will be back home. We are talking to ElBaradei, it's not our first meeting. I met him a few months ago in Vienna. We believe that we should cooperate. We are working with each other. But the main problem is Iran. Iran is the country that announced that one missile toward Israel will destroy the Jewish state. So we should be concerned about Iranian efforts to develop nuclear weapon. More than that, they are trying now to develop a new missile that will include Berlin, London, Paris and the southern part of Russia in its range. So, if we would have to do something with ElBaradei, it's to ask him to continue with his efforts to push the Iranians to put an end to their efforts to develop nuclear weapons" 2.06 8. - Story Text: Israeli Foreign Minister says Israel will work with
ElBaradei, but warns IAEA should be more concerned about
Iran's nuclear powers.
United States Secretary of State Colin Powell met
with Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom on Tuesday
(July 6) to discuss issues pertaining to the removal of
settlements in the West Bank.
After their meeting, Powell told journalists that the
administration was disappointed by the Israeli government's
failure to remove illegal outposts, but reinforced the
administration's confidence in the Sharon government.
The meeting comes as U.N. nuclear watchdog head Mohamed
ElBaradei arrived in Israel to start talks on ridding the
Middle East of atomic arms.
Israel neither confirms nor denies having nuclear arms.
ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency,
wants to get the Israelis to drop their "strategic
ambiguity" policy, diplomats said. The Jewish state says
this is impossible at present because of continued
hostility from the neighboring Arab world and Iran.
"We are talking to ElBaradei, it's not our first
meeting. I met him a few months ago in Vienna. We believe
that we should cooperate. We are working with each other.
But the main problem is Iran. Iran is the country that
announced that one missile toward Israel will destroy the
Jewish state. So we should be concerned about Iranian
efforts to develop nuclear weapon."
"More than that, they are trying now to develop a new
missile that will include Berlin, London, Paris and the
southern part of Russia in its range. So, if we would have
to do something with ElBaradei, it's to ask him to continue with his
ef
forts to push the Iranians to put an end to
their efforts to develop nuclear weapons," Shalom said.
Diplomats said ElBaradei intended during his three-day
visit to "promote the concept of a nuclear free zone in the
Middle East" in meetings with senior Israeli officials.
Shalom will meet ElBaradei on Thursday (July 8) at
Pittsburgh International Airport.
