LUNS: "I may say that I take it not only as a great personal honour and pleasure but I regard it as having perhaps symbolic value that one of my very first official engagements as Secretary-General of NATO should be to participate in the twentieth anniversary celebration of the NATO Defence College in this splendid building which the Italian Government has so generously provided as its headquarters on the outskirts of Rome "Citta eterno" which means the eternal city. I feel the more keenly the other than they were aware that as a former (INDISTINCT) of signals of the Royal Netherlands Navy I would never have made the grade and be accepted as one of your alumni but here I am." - Story Text: NATO'S new Secretary-General, Joseph Luns addressed the twentieth anniversary of the NATO Defence College in Rome yesterday (8 October). The aim of the school is to establish understanding between NATO countries and encourage its students, mainly members of the military and diplomatic corps, to work together on problems concerning NATO and developing countries. The courses in Rome last for six months and include tours of European and North American nations. After completing their course requirements, most students go on to hold key NATO positions. Every year a reunion is held at the college by past students and this year's class meeting combined with the 20th anniversary celebrations of the school.
