- Story Text: United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said
that serious discussions were underway in the U.N. Security
Council to get Iraqi oil exports flowing again.
The United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan
acknowledged Washington's call for end to sanctions on Iraq,
but declined to speculate on a possible timetable for the
lifting of the 12-year U.N. embargo.
With the United States pushing for a full lifting of
sanctions there are worries that Iraqi oil exports, Baghdad's
main revenue earner, may not resume any time soon under the
U.N.'s oil-for-food programme.
"There are serious discussions in the council and this is
one of the issues that is being discussed," Annan said of a
restoration of the programme after talks with Austrian
President Thomas Klestil.
"The question of the lifting of sanctions has been raised
and I think the sanctions have to be lifted some day. I hope
the Council will focus on what needs to be done," Annan said.
He was speaking ahead of a 1930GMT session of the
Security Council on Tuesday on the seven-year programme.
The U.N. has the authority to oversee Iraq oil sales
until June 3 when the existing six-month phase of oil-for-food
expires.
Legal uncertainty over the ownership of Iraq's oil has
kept shipments at a standstill since the start of the U.S.-led
war a month ago.
