- Story Text: As Russia and the United States held high-level talks
over North Korea's nuclear programme, United Nations
Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said he is following the
North Korean nuclear issue very closely.
Annan arrived in Dushanbe on Monday (October 21), where
he met Tajik president Imamoli Rachmonov. This is the
fourth-leg of his week-long tour of five former Soviet Central
Asian states.
Commenting on U.S. allegations that Pyongyang had admitted
pursuing a nuclear arms programme in violation of an
international agreement, Annan said that he was following the
issue very closely.
"I know there are discussions in many capitals also on
this issue. And of course the revelations came suddenly and
we are all studying it and the governments are in discussions
to see what could be done," he told journalists after his
talks with President Imomali Rachmonov.
U.S. officials said on Sunday that a 1994 agreement with
North Korea to freeze its nuclear weapons programme had been
effectively nullified after the isolated communist country
admitted violating the deal.
U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton arrived in Moscow
on Monday for talks with Russian officials on a variety of
issues. North Korea's nuclear programme was at the top of his
agenda.
"It is fair to say the Russian government shares President
(George W.) Bush's concern about this egregious violation of
the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," said U.S.
Undersecretary of State John Bolton.
Bolton spoke to reporters as he headed into talks with
Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Mamedov and after meetings with
Vladimir Rushailo, who heads the Kremlin's Security Council,
and Atomic Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev.
