- Story Text: Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov has opened two
days of intensive talks with the new U.S. administration in
the hope of securing answers to the question of how Washington
plans to build its proposed anti-missile shield.
Ivanov's first meeting on Friday (May 18) was with U.S.
Secretary of State Colin Powell.
After the meeting, Ivanov told reporters they had held a
"constructive" meeting. He said: "As of now I would like to
tell you that the atmosphere, the environment of our talks is
very constructive. The kind of environment which will enable
us to discuss constructively and positively all issues on our
agenda."
On Thursday Ivanov had told reporters that be hoped that
"bumpy" incidents in relations in the period after President
George W. Bush's inauguration were behind them. He said it was
important for Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin to
meet before a planned encounter duting July's G8 summit of
industrialised countries in Genoa, Italy.
Ivanov also said he would seek explanations on the
anti-missile defence scheme that Bush has made clear he will
develop regardless of Russian and Chinese objections and a
cool reception from some U.S. allies. Ties have also been
strained by expulsions by Russia and the United States of
diplomats alleged to be spies.
In addition to his meeting with Powell on Friday, Ivanov
will also hold separate talks with Bush and U.S. National
Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.
