- Story Text: US Secretary of State addresses Iran problem at news
conference with Germany's chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has said after a
meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in
Berlin on Friday (February 4) that Iran had the "right to
use nuclear technology for non-military purposes" but that
both Germany and the United States believed "it is in the
interest of the international community that there be no
availabilty of nuclear weapons."
"Of course we have addressed the issue of Iran and what
is most important is Iran's right to use nuclear technology
for non-military purposes," Schroeder told a news
conference at the chancellery.
"But we both believe it is in the interest of the
international community that there be no availabilty of
nuclear weapons."
"I have made clear that Germany, along with France and
Great Britain, will do everything, and I mean everything,
to go down a political and diplomatic path in order to
achieve a solution which is widely acceptable. I believe
the steps taken so far are the right steps towards this
solution," Schroeder said.
On a whistle-stop tour of European capitals before
heading to the Middle East, Rice said Iran had not shown it
could meet its international obligations but backed efforts
by European nations to try and find a diplomatic solution
with Tehran.
"The Iranians need to be in compliance with their
international obligations and we have very good cooperation
and discussion with our EU-3 colleagues (European Union
members France, Germany and Great Britain) on a solid
message to the Iranians that this is a necessity," Rice
said.
She also disucssed the visit of U.S. President George W.
Bush to Germany later this month with Schroeder, Bush's
first trip to Germany since before the Iraq war.
"The President looks forward to coming here to meeting
you in Mainz and to continuing to deepen our cooperation,
to opening a new chapter in U.S.-German relations," Rice
said.
U.S.-German relations were at an all-time low after
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's 2002 election victory
in part on the back of his fierce criticism of U.S. plans
for war in Iraq.
