- Story Text: Rice discusses US troop transfer to Romania with
foreign minister.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with
Romania's foreign minister on Thursday (May 5, 2005) and the
National Security Council to discuss the potential transfer
to Romania and Bulgaria of U.S. troops now in Germany.
The shift is part of a revamping of U.S. forces abroad.
"It's a very important process that we are going
through of the repositioning of our forces, but it's
something that really can't be rushed," Rice said.
The U.S. Secretary of State also paid tribute to
Romania's contribution to the war in Iraq.
"I want especially to thank Romania for the role that
it is playing in Iraq and Afghanistan and to say to the
Romanian people and the families of those who have
sacrificed that we appreciate the sacrifice, we know the
loss and heartbreak that it brings when soldiers are lost,
but we also know that nothing of value is ever gained
without sacrifice. Friends like Romania whom themselves
have experienced tyranny are the strongest fighters for
those who are still fighting democracy," she told reporters.
Ungureau responded saying that Romania "believes in the
value of democracy" and will "keep steady and firm in our
foreign policy."
