- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said she
expects Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to "cheat "
in next month's national elections.
Albright made the accusations during a break in talks
with Croatian President Stipe Mesic, who awarded her with the
Badge of the Grand Order of Queen Jelena.
But she also said she hoped the presidential elections
would allow Yugoslavs to turn their back on Milosevic's
authoritarian rule. Albright has tried, so far without
success, to persuade the Yugoslav opposition to Milosevic to
unite behind a single candidate.
The U.S. sees Croatia, which turned to the West after the
death of President Franjo Tudjman last year, as a model for
Balkan countries breaking with the violent past.
