It isn't just Saddam and you didn't murder thirty thousand people just with one or two people. It's a tiny sliver of Iraq but there is thousands of people who were implicated in those crimes. And they are now trying to kill Americans to bring back the old order. But it's not going to happen. And I think also what this message is is that we have most Iraqi people on our side and that's one of the reasons we win." 2.36 13. - Story Text: U.S. Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, one of
the key architects of the war to topple Saddam, has visited
the Iraqi police academy.
U.S. Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz is touring
Iraq to see for himself the conditions in the country.
Wolfowitz visited on Sunday (July 20, 2003) the Iraqi police
academy, the Iraqi Foreign ministry.
He also met with General Jhon Abizaid, the head of the Central Command
in the Middle East and Afghanistan. Later he toured the U.S. army
headquarters.
On Saturday (July 19) Wolfowitz visited the the key
Shi'ite cities of Kerbala and Najaf, where he met with military
officials and local leaders.
He also toured the site of the ancient city of Babylon, and visited a
nearby mass gravesite.
Visiting the U.S. army headquarters, Wolfowitz said: "The
horror of Saddam Hussein, the horror of this place, is the
reason why the fear hasn't left this country, particularly if
people think that he is still alive. ... And I think also what
this message is is that we have most Iraqi people on our side
and that's one of the reasons we win."
Wolfowitz visited Baghdad on a low-key tour to boost
flagging US morale, 100 days after troops entered the Iraqi
capital to declare the rule of Saddam Hussein over.
Many Iraqis say Washington has failed to restore order and
basic services after the fall of Saddam, and anger is growing.
