- Story Text: Joint efforts to fight terrorism were the thrust of
discussions between British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and
his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov during talks in Moscow on
Wednesday.
At a joint news conference after the talks in Moscow
on Wednesday (October 31, 2001) Jack Straw and Igor Ivanov confirmed
that fighting terrorism was the common goal both countries
were pursuing.
"Today it is clear that our national interests coincides
in a set of entirely common interests. So we have a common
interest in removing the threat of Al-Qaida terrorist network
helping the people of Afghanistan to build the single nation
in which terrorists have no place and ensure that weapons of
mass destruction do not fall into irresponsible hands," said
Straw.
Straw, who took over at the Foreign Office in June, said
relations between Moscow and London had improved dramatically,
as demonstrated by President Vladimir Putin's good personal
relations with Prime Minister Tony Blair.
During his visit to Moscow, Straw is also expected to meet
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov.
