- Story Text: On the second anniversary of the attack on the World
Trade Center UN Secretary General Annan has spoken of how
the world must remain vigilant against acts of terror.
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, speaking in
Geneva on Thursday (September 11) ahead of a meeting of
foreign ministers for the five permanent members of the UN
Security Council, said he had been in New York at the time
of the September 11 attacks on the twin World Trade Center
towers.
He said the anniversary of that incident should remind
people that international cooperation is needed.
"Obviously we all remember those who died, I was in New
York when it happened and I know what a dramatic and tragic
incident that was and I think this should also remind us
that we need to co-operate across international borders, we
need international co-operation and work together to be
able to contain terrorists," said Annan.
Sweden was left in shock on Thursday after the death of
their Foreign Minister Anna Lindh. She died after being
stabbed by a mystery attacker.
Politicians and ordinary people have compared it to the
death of U.N. special envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello in a
bomb attack in Baghdad last month. Kofi Annan said: "and
that the fight against terrorism is not over as we saw in
Iraq recently with the attack against my own colleagues at
the UN and what we've seen yesterday in Sweden with the
death of the wonderful and great foreign minister of
Sweden."
