WALDHEIM: "The situation in the Middle East is dangerous and explosive and long as no lasting solution has been found. We welcome, of course, all efforts which aim to contribute to a solution ... like this military disengagement. But let me say very clearly that a durable peace can only by found through a global solution of the Middle East problem." United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim arrived in Cairo on Friday for talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. Mr. Waldheim arrived in Egypt at a time when Middle East tension is heightening with each day. A direct state???? between Israel and Egypt over the form future negotiations will take leads most observers to believe a lasting peace is still sometime away. Mr. Waldheim was met by Egyptian Deputy-Premier and Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy, and by UN officials. He was then whisked across the tarmac to the air terminal and a news conference. - Story Text: United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim arrived in Cairo on Friday (25 July) for talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat amid an atmosphere of increasing Middle East tension.
Despite President Sadat's last minute decision to extend the U.N. peacekeeping force's mandate by three months, hopes for a lasting solution to the Egyptian-Israeli problem are still dim.
President Sadat will only negotiate through another country. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin will only agree to direct talks between the two countries.
President Sadat said on Friday that Egypt now had "the upper hand" and it did not matter whether "a certain step fails or succeeds" as Egypt's ":armed forces are ready."
Mr. Waldheim said his arrival in Cairo was especially important in the light of the latest developments in the area. He said it was very important for him to know the views of the Egyptian Government, but added that he had no present plans to visit Israel.
