United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan met
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in Jerusalem on Sunday
(March 13).
Annan is in the Middle East to hold talks with Israeli
and Palestinian leaders and he will attend the opening
ceremony of the new Yad Vashem holocaust museum in
Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Sharon said he hoped that Annan's visit would "tighten
the relations between Israel and the U.N. and will help
promote the political process in the region".
Annan replied: "We've all been very encouraged by
recent developments, including the Sharm el-Sheikh
agreement and as a member of the Quartet look forward to be
working with you and Prime Minister (sic) Abbas in moving
the process forward. And I'm looking forward very much, Mr.
Prime Minister, to our discussions on all these issues."
On Monday, Annan is due to meet President Mahmoud Abbas
ahead of the Palestinian leader's visit to Cairo to hold
talks with militant factions in a bid to reach a ceasefire
with Israel.
