- Story Text: The Security Council of the United Nations voted on Tuesday (August 1) to continue efforts to secure the independence of the South-African administered territory of South West Africa (known in the UN as Namibia).
The Secretary General, Mr. Kurt Waldheim, was empowered to continue contacts with South Africa and the people of Southwest Africa. Mr. Waldheim was also given authority to appoint a representative to help in his mission.
The Security Council asked Mr. Waldheim to report back by November 15.
Voting in the council chamber was fourteen-nil in favour of this course of action, with the People's Republic of China abstaining.
The United States, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China spoke in support of independence for South West Africa in the closing stages of a two-day debate which followed a progress report by Mr. Waldheim.
A League of Nations mandate under which South Africa administered the former German colony was revoked in 1966.
