It is evident that a solution of the problem of Southern Rhodesia and Namibia (South West Africa) can only be found... can only be on the basis of majority rule. There can be not the slightest doubt that only majority rule can solve these problems. And I think there is now general support for such a solution. If the Smith regime is not recognising this necessity in the very near future, then a concentration of force.....in fact it has already started, as you know......between the liberation movements and the Smith regime. I am sure that if no solution is found very soon....time is running out...then we have to expect very serious deterioration on the situation and increasing violence in the area". - Story Text: The Secretary-General or the United Nations, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, arrived in the Nigerian capital of Lagos on Friday (14 May), on the final stages of his African tour.
He was met at the airport by numerous government officials before speaking to newsmen.
He told them he considered the Southern African situation very grave and serious. He said it was evident that a solution of the problem of Southern Rhodesia and Namibia (South West Africa) could only be solved by majority rule.
Dr. Waldheim said if the Rhodesian government led by Ian Smith did not recognise this, then confrontation between liberation movements and the Smith regime was inevitable.
Dr. Waldheim discussed a range of southern African problems with Nigeria's leader, Lieutenant-General Olusegun Obassanjo and other officials.
This film is serviced with English Speech by Dr. Waldheim. A transcript appears below.
