- Story Text: Mr. Joseph J. Sisco, United States' Assistant Secretary of State arrived in Cairo yesterday (Friday, April 10) for talks on the Middle-East situation. Mr. Sisco is expected to meet with President Nasser during his four-day visit, making this the highest-level contact in Cairo between the United States and the United Arab Republic since the Six-Day War of 1967, when Egypt broke off diplomatic relations.
Mr. Sisco, President Nixon's Middle-East expert, said on arrival that he hoped his tour would "deepen the dialogue" between the U.S. government and Middle East countries. America wanted to see peace replace senseless killings and destruction, he added. Later, at a press conference Mr. Sisco said he had come to hear and see for himself how the situation stands.
Today, Mr. Sisco met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad at the Minister's Office for a first round of exchanges. Informed sources said that they were expected to discuss last Wednesday's air attack by Israel in which 30 Arab children were killed. American made Phantom jets are reported to have been the planes used in the attack.
