- Story Text: The 41-nation Organisation of African Unity (O.A.U.), setting itself on a collision course with Britain, on Friday (28 January) urged the United Nations Security Council to invalidate the Rhodesia settlement.
Mauritanian President Mortar Ould Daddah, current chairman of the O.A.U., made the proposal in a detailed policy statement at the opening meeting of the U.N. Security Council session in Addis Ababa, the first to be held in Africa and the first away from New York since 1952.
Though the Council agenda is in deliberately general terms -- covering the range of African questions, including South West Africa, apartheid, and the Portuguese territories -- Rhodesia has become an immediate preoccupation because of the current crisis.
On Thursday (27 January) VISNEWS cameraman Tafesse Jarra was on hand for the arrival of U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim and O.A.U. Chairman, President Ould Daddah, who was greeted by Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie.
SYNOPSIS: United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, arriving in Addis Ababa on Thursday for the week-long U.N. Security Council session on African problems, which began on Friday. The historic session is the first held by the fifteen-nation council away from New York since 1952, and the first-ever in Africa. Mr. Waldheim noted that the decision to meet in Africa was "to be nearer to the hot spots and the areas of tension and conflict."
Other delegations arriving included representatives of the Soviet Union. Although the Council agenda is in deliberately general terms - covering the range of African questions, including South West Africa, apartheid, and the Portuguese territories - Rhodesia has become an immediate preoccupation because of the current crisis. Secretary-General Waldheim said he hoped the Council's resolutions would be adopted unanimously.
Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah, current Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity, arrived soon after the U.N. Secretary-General. He was greeted by Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie. At the opening of the session on Friday, President Ould Daddah, speaking for the O.A.U., urged the U.N. Security Council to invalidate the Rhodesia settlement.
The proposal, made in a detailed policy statement, sets the forty-one nation O.A.U. on a collision course with Britain. Speaking in the name of Africa, Mr. Ould Daddah said Britain should begin talks with representatives of the Rhodesian African majority away from what he called "the oppression prevailing in Rhodesia."
