- Story Text: A new immersive exhibition in London recreates the ancient Roman city of Pompeii which was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
“The Last Days of Pompeii” opens in London this Friday (November 14), offering immersive elements like a 360-degree virtual recreation of the volcano and VR headset-assisted walks through a suburban villa.
Some exhibit halls also display artefacts like a Diana the Huntress figurine along with replicas of objects recovered from the doomed Roman town such as written tablets and sculptures of mythological creatures.
Other replicas include those of the plaster casts of corpses recovered from under the volcanic rubble in Pompeii.
The exhibition’s curator Miriam Huescar Lopez told Reuters that the plan was to get the original casts from Pompeii but owing to security reasons, the team had to settle for “3D-printed replicas”.
As for the new-age tech in the show, the 360-degree room reimagines daily life in Pompeii while building up to the catastrophic eruption that destroyed it.
Meanwhile, the virtual reality (VR) experience allows visitors to walk into the Villa of the Mysteries (Villa dei Misteri), one of the most well-preserved suburban villas on the outskirts of Pompeii.
People can walk through the house’s baths, kitchen, and a worship room moments before the volcano erupts.
“The Last Days of Pompeii” runs at London’s Immerse LDN arena until March 2026.
