- Story Text: French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (November 13) praised France's resilience in the aftermath of the 2015 Paris attacks and said the country will "relentlessly continue the fight against terrorism," as the capital marked a decade since the rampage by Islamist militants that killed 130 people.
"Paris held firm, you held firm, France held firm, the Republic held firm," Macron said during a ceremony held at a newly inaugurated garden in tribute to the victims of the Nov. 13, 2015 attacks.
"No one can guarantee, unfortunately, the end of attacks. But we can guarantee that for those who will take arms against France, the response will be intractable," he added.
The assault on November 13, 2015, began with suicide bomb blasts that killed one person, bus driver Manuel Dias, outside the Stade de France sports stadium and continued with gunmen opening fire at five other locations in central Paris.
The attacks were the deadliest on French soil since World War Two, scarring the national psyche and prompting emergency security measures, many of which are now embedded in law.
Speaking during the ceremony that featured musical and dance performances, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said her city answered to the attacks with a keyword - "resist together."
"It's our way to tell the world that we are not afraid, that we will continue to live in joy and freedom," Hidalgo said.
