- Story Text: Civil society from Australia and the Pacific Islands on Thursday (November 13) gathered at COP30 to make the case for bringing the U.N. climate summit to Oceania in 2026.
Representatives of Indigenous communities, associations, unions, and investment groups made the case for holding a COP in a country that's advancing efforts toward a clean energy transition.
They also highlighted the importance of returning the summit to the Asia-Pacific region and to a country where ancient Indigenous traditions endure.
Speakers gathered in front of the Australian pavilion, located next to its main competitor in the bid - Turkey.
The Eurasian country has doubled down on a rival bid, saying it wants a summit that more directly tackles financing for developing countries’ climate efforts while showcasing its own progress toward a 2053 net-zero emissions target.
That has led to an attention-sapping impasse that must be overcome at this year's COP30 meeting currently underway in Belem, Brazil.
