- Story Text: A ceremony was held on Friday (November 14) for 20 Turkish military personnel who were killed when a military cargo plane crashed this week near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border.
The C-130 cargo aircraft had left Azerbaijan for Turkey and crashed on Tuesday (November 11) in an incident marking the NATO member's highest military death toll since 2020. It was carrying a 10-person maintenance team for Turkish F-16s that had earlier taken part in Victory Day celebrations in Azerbaijan, as well as the flight crew and maintenance equipment, the defence ministry said.
The bodies of the military personnel were repatriated on Thursday (November 11) and a farewell ceremony was held the next morning as their coffins were placed on planes to be brought to their hometowns for funerals and burial. The ceremony was attended by officials, including Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus and Defence Minister Yasar Guler.
Later on Friday, a funeral ceremony for three of those killed was held in Ankara, with hundreds of people, including ministers and party leaders, attending.
