- Story Text: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged the European Union to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine on Friday (November 14). A few weeks ahead of an EU summit, Merz said that there were very 'intensive' discussions about the issue.
"We are also in constant bilateral and multilateral talks with various Member States in the European Union to see whether we can go down this path together. We are examining all options," Merz said during a press conference with Cyprus' president Nikos Christodoulides in Berlin.
Christodoulides said that Cyprus wasn't opposed to the use of the assets but said finding a correct legal path was necessary. The European Union finance ministers agreed on Thursday (November 13) that funding Ukraine with a reparations loan based on frozen Russian assets would be the most "effective" of three options being considered by the European Union to help Kyiv.
