- Story Text: As the end of the year gets closer, millions of Americans are watching their health insurance costs — and worrying. Affordable Care Act also known as Obama Care subsidies are set to expire, and if Congress doesn’t act, many families could see their premiums double, even jump by thousands of dollars a month.
Open enrollment is already underway, but in Washington, there’s still no clear plan. Even after the recent government shutdown put a spotlight back on healthcare, Republicans haven’t rallied around a proposal to extend the subsidies or replace them.
In Atlanta, the uncertainty is already hitting home for Brady and Alexandra Reiter. The couple runs Renegade Lemonade, a small but thriving wine business that makes wine from lemons. And now, they say they’re having to rethink what their future looks like.
"It's making us re-evaluate leaving the corporate world. And it would be a shame, we've got this incredible business that we both love, and we love doing it together," Brady Reiter told Reuters. "And if we had to go back to corporate America because we can't afford access to healthcare."
The couple relies on ACA marketplace coverage, and the expected premium spike could jeopardize their business.
Their current tax credit is $2,231.92 per month. But with the enhanced subsidies set to lapse, he said:
"It changes it. Now it says $2,948.52 a month."
If that increase becomes a reality, the Reiters may be forced into a painful decision.
"For a few hundred dollars more a month, for it tripling kind of thing, we would figure out a way to suck it up. That we would give this money to big corporations. That's what we'd have to do. If it's a few thousand dollars more or a couple thousand, then we have to reevaluate, does one of us go back to work," Reiter said.
His wife, Alexandra, said the end of the government shutdown brought relief, but also frustration that lawmakers left healthcare unresolved.
"For them to not have come to a decision on the health care disturbs me greatly because I feel like it was swept under the rug and we had the attention," Alexandra Reiter told Reuters. "I'm afraid what's going to happen now, now that the government, is going to be back up and running, maybe it's gonna have a lower importance."
The Reiters live in the same congressional district represented by Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has recently spoken out in favor of preserving ACA subsidies, citing worries from constituents about losing coverage.
Asked about Greene’s comments, President Trump responded, "I don’t know what happened to Marjorie… She's lost her way, I think."
As Congress remains stalled and deadlines loom, families like the Reiters are left waiting and worrying about what happens next.
