- Story Text: Spanish coast guard rescued 57 migrants off the Canary Islands on Friday (November 14) and brought them to the Arguineguin port.
The wooden boat was rescued 3 miles off the island of Gran Canaria and there were women and children among the rescued migrants.
The Spanish coast guard said they rescued at least another 377 migrants from two migrants boats off the island of El Hierro.
The number of migrants reaching the Canary Islands from West Africa hit an all-time high in 2024 but the number of arrivals this year has fallen by 46%, according to data released by Spain's Interior Ministry.
The Atlantic route is especially dangerous as rough weather can easily capsize the fragile rafts, dugout-like boats and dinghies used by most migrants.
The European Commission said on Tuesday (November 11) that Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Italy will be eligible for help in dealing with migratory pressures under a new EU mechanism when the bloc's pact on migration and asylum comes into force in the middle of next year.
