- Story Text: Brazil's COP30 president on Friday (November 14) promised to find a way to increase the host country's delegation at COP30 after a meeting with discontented Indigenous people.
Alongside his government's ministers for the environment and Indigenous peoples, Andre Correa do Lago met on the sidelines of summit in Belem with representatives from Indigenous communities after members of the Munduruku people staged a peaceful sit-in that blocked the main access to the COP30 venue in the morning.
Nato Tupinamba, a 'paje', or shaman, expressed his community's rejection of both a proposed hydroway in the Tapajsos river and a railroad between the neighbouring states of Mato Grosso and Para.
Throughout the summit's first week, Indigenous people have complained about their relative absence in the negotiations and discussions, despite the fact they are considered the Amazon’s guardians and stewards.
However, Brazil's Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, said that of the 1,200 accreditations allocated to Brazil, 400 were for Indigenous representatives.
