- Story Text: Locals in Delhi said they were facing difficulties, pertaining to their health, owing to rising pollution levels in the city on Saturday (November 15).
New Delhi's reading according to SAFAR, a weather forecasting agency under the ministry of earth sciences, was 388, making the Indian capital one of the world's most polluted major cities.
The city's air quality index has hovered above 400 this week, ranking in the "severe" category, prompting authorities to step up curbs on construction and industrial activity.
"There's too much pollution, especially in the morning…it's difficult to breathe, my chest feels tight. While running, phlegm is also formed" said a resident.
Another resident said measures like gargling have become essential to prevent throat problems.
Chronic air pollution cuts average life expectancy and residents should consider moving out of Delhi, said a health expert on Thursday.
In the past authorities have blamed much of the smog shrouding the city every winter on smoke from farmers illegally burning crop stubble to clear their fields in the neighbouring breadbasket states of Punjab and Haryana. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
