- Story Text:U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday (November 29) that the airspace above and surrounding Venezuela should be considered "closed in its entirety," but gave no further details as Washington ramps up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro's government.
Venezuela's government and the U.S. Defense Department did not respond to requests for comment. The announcement follows months of U.S. strikes on alleged drug boats in the region, with Trump recently hinting at possible land operations against Venezuelan drug traffickers.
The U.S. FAA last week warned airlines of heightened security risks flying over Venezuela, prompting several carriers to cease operations. In retaliation, Venezuela revoked the rights of six international airlines.
Maduro dismissed U.S. drug trafficking allegations and accused Trump of seeking regime change.
