- Story Text:Hong Kong police on Monday (December 1) released a student who was detained after handing out flyers calling for an independent investigation into a deadly fire that killed at least 146 people.
Miles Kwan, 24, left a Hong Kong police station by taxi on Monday afternoon. Police had detained Kwan, 24, on Saturday (November 29). Reuters could not establish whether he had been arrested.
The student from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) handed out flyers on Friday (November 28) calling for signatures to an online petition demanding an independent probe into possible corruption and a review of construction oversight. The online petition promoted by the flyer drew over 10,000 signatures by Saturday (November 29) afternoon before it was closed.
Two others have also since been arrested on suspicion of seditious intent, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post said. Local police declined to comment on those reported arrests.
China's national security office warned individuals on Saturday against using the disaster to "plunge Hong Kong back into the chaos" of 2019, when massive pro-democracy protests challenged Beijing and triggered a political crisis.
The massive fire began Wednesday (November 26) at housing estate Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, near the border with mainland China. More than 40 people are still missing, police said on Sunday (November 30).
