- Story Text: Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-Lung on Thursday (November 20) pledged support for Japan during its escalating diplomatic spat with China.
It comes a day after two government officials in Tokyo said China has indicated it will ban all imports of Japanese seafood, in what appears to be the latest salvo in the dispute.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Lin said Beijing “uses this kind of economic coercion and military intimidation to bully other countries… trade, investment and tourism have all been weaponised against Taiwan.”
Tensions between the two countries ignited after new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said this month that a Chinese attack on Taiwan threatening Japan's survival could trigger a military response.
China has demanded she retract the remarks and urged its citizens not to travel to Japan, resulting in mass cancellations that could deal a sizeable blow to the world's fourth-largest economy.
While Japan does not have formal ties with Taiwan, the two are long-time allies and important trading partners. Japan ranks as Taiwan’s third-largest trading partner, while Taiwan holds the position of fourth-largest for Japan.
