- Story Text: Pro-Russian protesters stormed the prosecutor's office in the separatist-held city of Donetsk on Thursday (May 1), lobbing stones and smashing windows after accusing the office of working for the Western-backed government in Kiev, which came to power in February when the previous Moscow-backed president was toppled after months of street protests.
"The building of the Prosecutor's Office is under our control. Under our control, under Donbass's, under the people's," pro-Russian activist Sergei said.
"They (the police) started throwing grenades at us. Two separatists were taken to a hospital. One is in the intensive care. We didn't give up, we entered. We entered the backyard. There was local police there and the police from Lviv. We disarmed the Lviv police and took them away from the territory of the Prosecutor's Office," Sergei added.
Separatists in Donetsk, capital of a region of about 4 million people at the centre of the uprising across Ukraine's industrial heartland, have declared a "People's Republic of Donetsk" and called a referendum on secession for May 11, undercutting a planned presidential election in Ukraine two weeks later.
Ukraine's leaders conceded on Wednesday they were "helpless" to counter the fall of government buildings and police stations to the separatists in the Donbass coal and steel belt, source of around a third of the country's industrial output. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
