- Story Text: Senior Women Service Officers in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Alliance met in London on Wednesday (12 November) for a two-day conference, hosted by the United Kingdom's Women's Services as their contribution to International Women's Year.
On Thursday (13 November), they toured service facilities in the London area including the Army Catering Corps Centre in Aldershot, near London.
Officers came from Canada, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway and the United States of America.
In the region they represent, there are some 120,000 women serving in the NATO command.
It is the fifth conference of its kind, and serves a forum to exchange information on the status of the various women's military units in the several countries. Delegates also discussed the prospects for future use and employment of women in the NATO alliance.
Among other things, the delegates learned that Belgium has enlisted the first-ever woman in its Armed Forces this year.
The women officers are concerned about the role of women in forces which are being completely integrated. In the past they have called for women to be given the opportunity to serve in all jobs specifications, barring combat, except in a national emergency; and to have equal rights and pay with their male colleagues.
