Socialist President Francois Mitterrand was re-elected on May 8, with 54 per cent of the vote. Conservative French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac, will submit his resignation on May 10 after a convincing defeat in the presidential poll.
It was not clear on May 9 who would be France's next prime minister, but the man widely tipped to succeed Chirac is Michel Rocard, the Socialist Party Deputy leader.
During the voting, Chirac and Mitterrand attended a World War Two Armistice Day ceremony. Last minute polls had shown the result would be close. However, Chirac's score of 46 per cent was the lowest by a right-wing candidate in thirty years.
Seventy-one year-old Mitterrand has received a pledge from centre parliamentarians that they would not obstruct his plans to form a moderate government.
In defeat, Chirac said he bowed to the judgment of the French people.
