Police in Dhaka arrested more than 600 people on January 5 during a general stoppage in support of pay claims by the country's 40,000 doctors, engineers and agricultural researchers. Police said 50 people were injured as angry mobs set fire to houses and offices. Bangladesh's opposition parties called the six-hour stoppage to aid a two-week-old national strike by the government workers. The dispute closed most of the country's hospitals. affected the power supply and cut telephone services. During the January 5 stoppage demonstrators set fire to a British High Commission mini-bus at Dhaka University, and police said a car carrying a government minister was stoned as it sped past pickets. A rally dispersed peacefully after being addressed by opposition spokesman Sheikh Wajed. The strike finally ended on January 6 when officers returned to work with a promise from President Hossain Mohammad Ershad that all their commands would be met. An official statement said the government would set up a high level committee to implement the demands as soon as possible.
