- Story Text: Communists in Hong Kong are continuing their anti-government activity with bomb throwing and the placing of booby traps in busy thoroughfares.
Today, three effigies - each containing bombs - were discovered in different parts of Hong Kong island.
Yesterday (Wednesday) a police explosive expert spent an hour examining a similar effigy outside a busy market in the central district of the island but it turned out to be filled with screwed-up newspapers.
The effigy, made a straw, had been placed on a traffic light. The police sealed off the area to traffic as their explosives expert, Inspector Norman Hill, checked the effigy.
A crowd of several hundred watched at a safe distance as Inspector Hill, in heavy protective uniform, worked for an hour to disarm the suspected bomb. He used a small penknife and a pair of scissors to cut down the effigy, which was covered in slogans and holding a Union Jack.
