- Story Text: Three German police officers have been shot dead and
one other officer wounded by a gunman in two separate
shootings in the western town of Dortmund.
A police spokesman said that a motorist in a BMW
was stopped by authorities in a routine traffic inspection on
Wednesday (June 14) because he was not wearing his seat belt.
Police said that the motorist then shot at two police
officers, killing a 35-year-old man and injuring his
25-year-old colleague. The assailant then fled in his car.
Police said they believe the same motorist then shot and
seriously wounded two more police officers several kilometres
(miles) away from the scene of the first shooting. They died
later in hospital.
Police identified the suspect as a 31-year-old resident of
Dortmund, who had had his drivers licence revoked in 1999. He
was driving a silver BMW 325 car.
