- Story Text: 200 picketing office workers stopped 20,000 longshoremen - dockers - working, April 21, in New York Harbour. The usually teeming busy docks were quiet as ships lay at anchor unable to discharge or load cargo. And passengers from the American Export Line vessel Independence and the German ship Bremen carried their own baggage ashore; with the help of crewmen and hotel staff.
The strike occurred over the refusal of the New York Shipping Association to recognise the Office Employees International Union as representative of 90 men and women shipping clerks.
Though thin and meagre, the white-collared workers picket lines were honoured by longshoremen. The strike was called the previous day, April 20, after Union branch secretary Ben Cohen had an our-long meeting with employers.
National Labour Relations Board called both sides to a meeting on the day of the strike. and special police detachments patrolled Dockland as a guard against violence - but unanimity in the office workers and longshoremen's unions made violence doubtful.
