- Story Text: British Foreign Office Official Oliver Wright flew into Montevideo on Wednesday (January 13) for talks with the Uruguayan Government following the kidnapping of British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson.
At a news conference on his arrival, Mr. Wright aid that the British Government held the Uruguayan Government responsible for the security of British diplomats. He also said that he didn't think there was any question of a ransom for the envoy's release.
Later Mr. Wright had talks with the Uruguayan Foreign Minister, Jorge Peirano Facio and then he went to the British Embassy to talk with the staff.
Mr. Jackson was kidnapped by members of the Tupamaros guerrilla group on January 8 while driving to the Embassy. More than 600 people said by the Government to be connected with the Tupamaros have been rounded up by troops during a massive sweep through Montevideo. So far there has been no lead to the whereabouts or fate of the kidnapped diplomat.
