- Story Text: United Nations (U.N.) security officers arrested members of a peaceful "sit-in" at the site of the U.N. Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday (June 11).
As Wagaki Mwangi, of the youth delegation to the Earth Summit, delivered her speech at the plenary hall, a demonstration began outside in protest against the alleged failings of the summit.
In her speech, Mwangi called the summit a farce and criticised the United States' position on the issues of climate change and biodiversity.
After her speech, Mwangi walked out to join the rest of the protesters. Soon afterwards, members of U.N. security police arrested and dragged some of the demonstrators away into an "access-restricted" area, barred from the press.
