- Story Text: Seven former Zaire army officers were sentenced to death on Monday (1 September) for conspiring to kill President Mobutu Sese Seko in an abortive coup last June.
Seven others of the 41 people charged in connection with the attempted coup were acquitted and an eight was committed to a tribunal court by the National War Council.
The remaining conspirators were sentenced to prison terms ranging from the six months to 20 years.
The Zaire AZAP News Agency named the seven sentenced to death as former Generals Falu, Utshudi and Katshivua, ex-Colonels Omba and Mudiayi, former Major Mpika and Second Lieutenant Kabamba.
President Mobutu has said a foreign power was behind the thwarted coup. He did not name the country but Zaire newspapers alleged the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had backed the coup.
The trial lasted 12 days and was held behind closed doors because of its diplomatic implications.
