- Story Text: Thousands of Cubans on Sunday (August 14) paid tribute to a naval officer whom authorities allege was killed last week when Cubans fleeing to the United States (U.S.) hijacked his ship.
Addressing the crowd, Cuban naval chief Pedro Perez Betancourt repeated recent attacks on the United States (U.S.). The United States has been blamed by the Cuban authorities for a spate of hijacks and for street clashes in Havana on August 5.
"Yankee, pig, return the killer," the crowd chanted, demanding the United States either prosecute or send home the officer's alleged killer from among those refugees now seeking sanctuary in the United States.
The rally at Mariel, west of Havana, was the latest sign of the communist authorities' determination to respond to the unrest nine days ago, by staging vigorous displays of public support for the government of president Fidel Castro.
