- Story Text: Three Kenyan police officers are currently ending a three-month training course at the Nigerian Police Mounted Training Centre at Bukuru near Jos in Nigeria. The course is part of the Nigerian Federal Government's technical assistance programme to aid fellow-African states.
The course, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria, began in June. Originally four Kenyan officers arrived to join two Nigerian officers on the course, but one of the Kenyans died after a short illness a few weeks after arrival.
The mounted training centre was founded three years ago in Kaduna to train troopers for the mounted branch of the Nigerian Police. It recently moved to Bakuru in the Benue/Plateau state. It trains six classes of troopers for periods of 22 weeks at a time. The course attended by the Kenyans is the first specifically for officers. If it is successful it will become a regular feature of the centre.
The course covers basic riding skills, first aid for horses, mounted drill, use of arms on horseback and mounted sports.
