- Story Text: The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has opened
offices in Baghdad as humanitarian agencies begin to settle
into their roles and focus on the tasks ahead in war-torn
Iraq.
Employees of the relief agency entered their new
offices on Wednesday (April 30) and got straight to work.
Unpacking boxes and painting the rooms was just the
beginning of the list of tasks that lie ahead for them.
A spokesman on site said efforts were being split between
establishing the Baghdad office while continuing their
humanitarian work.
"We are doing simultaneously humanitarian work and
refurbishing and rehabilitating the office," he said as
colleagues explored their new workspace.
UNICEF is the world's leading child rights organization.
Operating in more than 158 countries, UNICEF works for
health, education, equality and protection for every child. It
is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of
individuals, foundations, businesses, and governments.
UNICEF has provided support to Iraqi children since 1952.
Over the last several months, the organisation has mounted
immunization campaigns and shipped in nutritional items to
boost the strength of Iraqi children and improve their chances
of survival in the event of war.
UNICEF has also positioned thousands of tonnes of relief
supplies in Iraq and neighbouring countries, including
high-protein biscuits, essential medicines, water purification
supplies, and other life-saving emergency items.
