- Story Text: A group of 120 officers of the defeated South Vietnamese armed forces were reunited with their families on Friday (19 December) after attending a six month re-education course. The reunion took place at Song than base, formerly a marine training camp eight miles (12 kms) north of Saigon.)
The officers -- ranging from second Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonels told the journalists at the ceremony that the re-education had made them good citizens. A group of the officers then sang a revolutionary song to the others.
Major Dac Tuong, commander of the Song Than camp, said thousands of officers and officials of the former regime had undergone re-education since the Communist-led takeover of South Vietnam last April.
All soldiers and officers of the former government's army have been required to register and enrol in re-education courses.
A camp officials said the returning officers would be kept under surveillance by local authorities before the restoration of their full rights as citizens. If they became involved in criminal activities or if they acted against the revolution, they would have to attend further courses.
